Transition Year Programme
Transition Year is an optional one-year programme which acts as a bridge between Junior and Senior Cycle. Avondale Community College offers a carefully designed programme to enable students to develop skills and initiative in a way that may not be possible in more exam-oriented contexts.
This year TY students completed 57 modules and took part in workshops such as media production, Chinese language and STEM workshops. They participated in out-of-school activities such as GoQuest, Croke Park tour and surfing. Students also participated in an end-of- year class trip to Manchester which included a visit to the Museum of Science & Industry and Alton Towers theme park.
Students who choose to do TY benefit in many ways. Recent graduates of TY 2022 said that some of the biggest benefits of TY were the new friendships they made, the trips that they participated in and the skills that they developed. Development of self- confidence and belief in their own capabilities were cited by students as key aspects of their personal growth and development. Public speaking, IT skills and communication skills were amongst the skills enhanced during TY which will benefit students immensely as they commence their Leaving Certificate next year. Students thoroughly enjoyed their TY experience and feel that they are now more focused and prepared for Senior Cycle. They have clear ideas on what subjects they want to do and are more informed as to the possible career paths which they will pursue after school.
