Avondale Community College
School Notes
Week beginning November 29th 2010

First Place in Rotary Cooking Competition

Congratulations to Transition Year student Rebecca Cullen who took
first place in the Rotary Young Chef Competition which was recently
held in Wicklow Town. This event is designed to allow competitors to
demonstrate their skills in cooking, menu and budget planning. Rebecca
is now busy preparing her latest submission in the hope of securing a
place in the National final. Best wishes.

Public Speaking Victory

Congratulations to senior students Laura Cullen, Amy Kenny and Conor
McGraynor who took first place in the first round of the Mental Health
Public Speaking Project. The Mental Health Public Speaking Project,
which celebrates its 30th Anniversary, is a project which aims to
promote an awareness of Mental Health among young people. Our team
will compete against Abbey Community College, Wicklow in the County
Final in January.

Interactive Open Days

On Monday and Tuesday of this week Avondale Community College opened
its doors for the fourth successive year to senior classes from our
neighbouring primary schools. Visiting students had the opportunity
to participate in interactive activities in a number of subjects
including English, Maths, PE and Music. They also visited practical
classes in Science, Art, Woodwork, Metalwork, Technical Graphics and
Home Economics. Many thanks to scientists from neighbouring
Pharmaceutical Company, Schering Plough who worked alongside teachers
and students to create some interesting experiments. We were delighted
to give these young students the opportunity to see what second level
may hold in store and we look forward to seeing many of them in
September.

Career Guidance

The Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) and The Disability Access
Route to Education (DARE) are college and university admissions
schemes which offer places on reduced points and extra college support
to school leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds or
to those with disabilities. Our Sixth Year students recently attended
a talk on HEAR and DARE. Both schemes have been set up by a number of
colleges and universities. Further information is available from Ms.
Lillis.

Sixth Year Parent Teacher Meeting

A reminder to all parents and guardians of Sixth Year students that
the Sixth Year Parent Teacher Meeting will take place in the school on
Thursday 2 December between 1.15 and 3.10 p.m. We look forward to
seeing all parents and guardians on this day.
