Avondale Community College
School Notes
Week beginning October 25th 2010

Swedish Guests

Avondale Community College was delighted to open its doors to 40
visiting students from Sweden. The students along with their teachers
received a warm welcome and were entertained by the school’s Irish
dancers and musicians on arrival. The morning entertainment was
followed by words of welcome from Ms. O’Neill and Mr. Martin Philips.
After a tour of the school the students joined various classes to
experience Irish education first hand and chatted with our students
about their own school experience.

Guidance News

Many thanks to Ms. Sarah Hearty of Carlow Institute of Technology, who
gave an excellent presentation to our senior students on the courses
available at the college. Congratulations to two senior students who
have been awarded places on the New Era Leaving Certificate Workshops.
These students will receive extra tuition in a range of subjects over
three weekends.
Finally, our thanks must also be extended to Ann

Lavelle of UCD, who recently gave a talk to the parents of Sixth Year
Students regarding grant applications and the Higher Education Access
Programme. Her presentation along with other information is available
in the Parents Section of our school website www.avondalecc.net

Comhairle na nOg

Well done to our senior students who recently took part in the
Comhairle na nOg, Youth Consultation Day. Our students along with
others from surrounding schools met in the Brockagh Resource Centre,
Laragh to discuss various youth related issues. The students involved
in this initiative were Colm Lawlor, Megan Byrne, Roisin Cullen, Amy
Kenny, Laura Cullen and Philip Cullen. They found this experience an
excellent opportunity to enhance their public speaking skills.

Sports News

Our Senior Boys Football team lost out to Colaiste Raithin in the
first round of the league, but are looking forward to their next match
against Abbey Community College after mid-term. Congratulations to our
Girls Basketball Team for their excellent win over St. Mary’s College,
Arklow in the first round of their league. Finally, well done to Adam
Cooney and Niall Ryan members of the School’s U16 County Hurling Team
who defeated Ballyhale in the South Lenister Final

Cross Country

50 students from our school will participate in the second round of
the Cross Country League at Avondale House after the mid-term. Best
wishes to all.

A reminder to all parents and students that there are a limited number
of places available for guitar and piano music lessons with the Bray
