Avondale Community College
School Notes
Week beginning September 13th 2010
Welcome Back
Welcome back all students and staff to Avondale Community College. This year we extend our welcome to a large group of First Year Students who are settling in well and making new friends. A number of new students have also joined other years including a group of Spanish students who will be studying in the school for a few weeks. Three new staff members have also joined our school. Ms. Byrne and Ms. Sullivan join the Irish and Science Departments while Mr. O’Loughlin has joined the Engineering Department. ‘Hola’ and best wishes to all new students and staff who we hope will enjoy their time with us.
Exam Results
The management and staff of Avondale Community College offer their best wishes to last year’s Leaving Certificate students who recently received their results. As college offers are presently being accepted and filled we wish all our past pupils every success with their future academic studies. Our Junior Certificate Students are eagerly waiting to receive their exam results on Wednesday 15 September. We hope their hard work will have paid off and that their results will encourage others to do well.
Digging it up in Glendalough
Fourteen senior students from Avondale Community College recently visited the UCD summer Archaeological Dig in Glendalough. This programme was organised by Dr. Thomas Kador of UCD and Ms. Lillis from our school. Dr. Kador and and his students were very welcoming, carefully explaining the whole process of a site dig from surveying to tidying up afterwards. We got a chance to use some of the surveying equipment and do some sifting where a wall had been found. We hope to have a follow-up visit from Dr, Kador in school later in the year and in the meantime those involved are busy putting together all information and photos from this very enjoyable and interesting day.
Sponsored Walk
Our annual sponsored walk will take place on Wednesday 29 September. Students participating in this event will be issued sponsorship cards in order to raise money for the school’s extra-curricular fund. Funding is used to subsidise various trips and other extra-curricular activities throughout the school year. Prizes will be awarded to the best collector in each year group.
Higher Options 2010
The countdown is on for the Higher Options Conference which will tak eplace in the RDS mid September. Universities, Institutes of Technology, Further Education colleges and information providers wil lattend. This conference provides an excellent opportunity to gather knowledge in order to make the best informed choices on where and what to study. Our senior students will be travelling to this event with Ms. Lillis in the coming weeks.
