Christmas Carol Service
A Christmas Carol Service will be held on Thursday 15th December at 7.00 p.m. in Avondale Community College. The choir is busy rehearsing for this event, which is sure to be enjoyable and entertaining.
Public Speaking Project
Well done to the Public Speaking Team from Avondale Community College who recently participated in the Mental Health Public Speaking Competition in The Grand Hotel, Wicklow. The team consisted of Alison Kearney, Craig Curley and Kate Privett as speakers and Patrick Kinsella, Sinead Gaffney and Natasha Byrne as researchers. The team presented their speeches in an impressive manner on the night. Well done to all involved.
Positive Reward Trips
Many trips are taking place this week to reward students for their hard work and positive attitude so far this year. 1st and 3rd year students will enjoy a trip to the cinema, while 2nd year students will travel to Dublin to enjoy Christmas on Ice. We hope the students enjoy these well deserved trips.
Sports News
1st Year Boys’ Football
The 1st Year Boys’ Football team enjoyed a great win over Coláiste Chill Mhantáin last week. They now meet Gaelcholáiste na Mara in the next round of the league. Well done and best of luck in the next round!
Girls’ Basketball
The U16 Girls’ Basketball team had a great win over East Glendalough in the Wicklow League. The U19 Girls’ Basketball team met a strong East Glendalough team and unfortunately they lost on the day. Both teams will meet Gaelcholáiste na Mara in the next round of the Wicklow league. Best of luck to both teams.
Transition Year News
Positive Reward Trip
Transition Year students will be enjoying a trip to the cinema as part of their positive reward system. They will also be taking part in Kris Kindle to reward their great effort and behaviour so far this year.
Pottery Workshop
Transition Year students took part in a day long pottery workshop on Friday 2nd December. The workshop was conducted by local ceramic artist Christien Van Bussel. Students received instruction in various pottery techniques. This was a most enjoyable day.
Talks
TY students will be attending a talk on drug and alcohol addiction, given by Cuan Mhuire. This is sure to be an educational experience.
Irish Workshop
Transition Year students took part in an Irish workshop with Seó Bóthair. This roadshow, which promotes the Irish language in secondary schools, included games, discussions, debates and role-play. The students also had an opportunity to create a piece for Radio Rí Rá. This was a fun and enjoyable way to learn Irish.
The Wicklow People TY Newspaper
The TY team of intrepid journalists are busy working on their proposals for The Wicklow People TY Newspaper. Last week the students had an opportunity to meet with two journalists from the newspaper and learn more about the journalistic process. The meeting was very informative and the team are enthusiastic and excited about this challenging and unique opportunity.
St. Vincent de Paul Collection
The annual food collection for St. Vincent de Paul is now taking place in Avondale Community College. All donations of non-perishable food items are greatly appreciated.
3rd Year CSPE Project
As part of their CSPE Action Project, 3 Deal invited guest speaker, Olwen Carolan from the Arklow Branch of The Irish Wheelchair Association, to speak to them about the work of the association. The talk was very informative and it is sure to be of benefit to the class. A big thank you to Olwen for taking her time to visit the school.
