South Wicklow Youth Leadership Awards
Five county Wicklow Schools celebrated the volunteering spirit of their young leaders in Avondale Community College last week. Sixth Year students from Avondale Community College, Rathdrum, St. Mary’s College, Arklow, Arklow Community College, Gaelcholáiste na Mara, Arklow and Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew were recognised for the significant role they played in their school community. The students completed a two day Youth Leadership Programme last August, which prepared them to carry out their senior prefect duties with confidence in their respective schools. The Awards Evening was an opportunity for the leadership skills and dedication of the students to be acknowledged and rewarded. Well done to all the Senior Prefects from Avondale Community College for their hard work throughout the year.
Athletics Success!
Avondale Community College enjoyed great success at the East Leinster Athletics Competition in Irishtown Stadium last Thursday. In the Senior category Laura Kavanagh collected the gold medal in the Triple Jump while Aoife Conroy made a great effort and received the 3rd place medal in both the 400 metre Hurdles and 400 metre race. In the Intermediate competition Patrick Kinsella received the silver medal for his efforts in the 1500 metre race and Amy Murphy finished 2nd place in the Long Jump competition. In the U16 category Katy Conroy’s efforts secured her 1st place in the 1500 metre race. In the Junior competition Amaris Borel excelled, picking up a gold medal in both the Long Jump and the 75 metre Hurdles. Liam Kinsella finished in 2nd place in the 800 metre race. The Avondale students displayed great enthusiasm and tenacity throughout. This hard work was justly rewarded as Avondale fared excellently on the day, dominating throughout the age groups. The school came away with a medal haul of four Gold, three Silver and two Bronze medals. This is a major achievement and the students now qualify for the Leinster Finals which will be held in Santry Stadium later this month. Well done to all the students and the best of luck in their upcoming competitions!
Super Sevens
Over forty students from Avondale Community College will compete in the Super Sevens competition in Bray next Wednesday. The students will compete in camogie, football and hurling competitions. This is sure to be a fun and enjoyable day for all. Best of luck to all the students invoved!
First Year Boys’ Football Final
The First Year Boys’ Football team will meet St. David’s School, Greystones in the final next Tuesday at 3p.m. The very best of luck to the team on the day!
E – Twinning Project
A selection of First Year students are currently involved in an E-Twinning project.The students will be discussing the transition from primary to secondary school with primary school students from schools in counties Tipperary, Kildare, Mayo and Dublin. This is an interesting and unique opportunity for all schools involved.
Y.S.I. National Speak Out
Transition Year students are busy preparing their poster display for the Y.S.I National Speak Out in Dublin next week. Best of luck to the Avondale cohort at this prestigious event.
Community Links in Valley View
Transition Year students have completed their Community Links work in Valley View. The students painted a Relaxation Room for the residents to enjoy. Well done to all students involved.
Careers Talks
Last week Avondale Community College welcomed Sarah from U.C.D. and Alison from I.T. Tallaght. Both speakers delivered excellent talks to the Fifth Year students on the many courses available in their respective colleges. Many thanks to the speakers!
Annual Avondale Community College Golf Classic
