Senior Girls County Final Victory

On Thursday the 3 March, the Senior Girls Football team made history in Avondale Community College by capturing their first ever A Championship title. The team competed in a very tightly contested match against Scoil Chonglais, Baltinglass. The match was score to score and on the final whistle the teams were level. Ten, nail biting, minutes of extra time were played before Avondale emerged victorious. The team was captained by Sarah Miley who accepted the trophy on behalf of her elated team mates. Top scorer for Avondale was Amy Murphy who scored an impressive (2-9). The team was made up of the following students Rebecca Cassin, Megan Davis, Alison Kearney, Katie Kennedy, Emer Byrne, Sarah Miley (2-3), Amy Murphy (2-9), Laura Kavanagh, Emma Birro, Katie Miley (1-4), Caithlin Olohan, Lauren Kennedy, Rachel Byrne, Lorna Driver, Aoife Clarke (1-0), Tracey Sunderland, Rebecca Connor, Emma Kennedy, Nicola Randle, Chrissy Byrne, Katie Doran, Dara Byrne, Aoife Byrne and Elizabeth Murphy.

All-Ireland Rotary Young Chef Competition

Remaining calm under pressure is what Transition Year student Rebecca
Cullen does best. Cooking for a panel of judges in Failte Irelands
Headquarters appeared to come as natural to our budding young chef as
preparing a meal at home. Under the guidance of her Home Economics
teacher Ms. Byrne, Rebeccas delicious three course meal secured her
a winning place in the All-Ireland Young Chef Rotary Competition. As part
of her prize Rebecca is now busy preparing for her work placement with
celebrity chef Nevin Maguire in his award winning restaurant in Cavan.

World Book Day Celebrations

Celebrating World Book Day promotes a love of books and reading in our
school. Following on from previous years the students of Avondale
Community College were delighted to celebrate this years World Book
Day in the presence of local author Christy Kenneally. Sharing his
love of language and books with our First Year students, the main aim
of this event was to encourage our students to explore the pleasure of
books and reading. Our senior students also joined Christy in a
Writer’s Workshop, during which they acquired some practical creative
writing tips from the highly acclaimed author. As part of this years
celebrations all non-exam students also enjoyed a reading week where
they were given the opportunity to read a selection of novels provided
by the English Department. We hope that this years event and continued
efforts will instil a love of books among our students.

Design a Book Mark Competition

As part of this years World Book Day Celebrations the Art Department
launched their Design a Bookmark competition. Students from all years
were given the opportunity to create their own bookmark. The winner of
which will be announced in the coming days.


Creative Writing Competition

Following the success of Avondale Writes, the school’s publication of
students work, the Parents Association have kindly offered to sponsor
A Creative Writing Competition. Students from all years are encouraged
to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the best short-story writer
from each year group. All stories must be typed and must be between
500-2000 words.

Music Concert

To coincide with Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations in the school, the
Music Department is delighted to announce that there will be a small
music recital held in the school on Monday 14 March at 7 pm. We hope
that some parents will join us for this seisiun which will showcase the
talents of our music students.
