Avondale Community College
School Notes
Week beginning October 4th 2010
Sponsored Walk
The annual sponsored walk took place on Wednesday 29 September. We were blessed with glorious weather despite rain having been forecasted. Well done to all students who raised money for the school. A special thanks, to members of the community who sponsored students for this event. Their donations are much appreciated and will go towards the school's extra-curricular fund. A large number of prizes were awarded to students including the best collectors in each group.
Trip to Killary
This Wednesday 40 Transition Year students will travel to Killary Adventure Centre. Accompanied by their teachers Ms. Hannafin and Mr. Breen the students are looking forward to two days of activities including high rope and zip wire challenges, orienteering, canoeing and other water sports. The annual trip to Killary is traditionally one of the most memorable trips of Transition Year and we hope that this year's group enjoy the experience.
Maths Week at UCD
Transition Year students will travel to UCD on Thursday 12 October to partake in Maths Week. The students will attend a series of short talks on a range of topics that involve Maths, including understanding how the shuffle works on an iPod, the fascinating world of ocean waves and examining the online world of Googling and social networking. We hope that this visit will inspire potential mathematicians among our students.
After-school Study
After-school study has been up and running in the school for many weeks now. It is available from Monday to Thursday between 3:45 and 6:15 each evening. Students can register for after-school study on Mondays at 10:45 with Mr. Breen in the Science Lab.
Study Skills
Study Skills are strategies and techniques that enable students to make the most efficient use of their time, resources, and academic potential. Developing and improving study skills can help make learning easier, and enable students to retain what they have learned for longer. Our Fifth Year students will take part in a Study Skills Workshop this week.
School Equestrian Team
It certainly wasn't a case of beginners' luck for our newly formed Equestrian Team of Chloe Daly, Michael Doyle and Thomas Gaffney. They finished sixth place, an impressive result by all accounts, on their first ever outing for Avondale Community College in the inter-schools Show Jumping competition. Senior student Padraig Geoghegan joins the team for their next outing. Best wishes to this latest edition to team sports in Avondale.
Sports News
Best wishes to our Senior Girls Football team who took on Abbey Community College in the first round of the Wicklow League on Monday. Secondly, a reminder to all members of the U16 Boys Basketball Team, that training takes place every Thursday evening between 3:45 and 5:15.
Games Club
Games Club takes place each lunch time in the school. It gives the students the opportunity to challenge one another to a game of chess or other board games during their lunch. Those involved are enjoying the experience, anyone who may be interested in joining can do so by contacting Ms. Egan or Ms. Burke.
Book Club
Book Club operates from the library each lunch time. Students are given the opportunity to read some of the many books available. Anyone interested in joining book club can contact Ms. Cullen in the library Monday to Friday.
